Block Wall Replacement

Block Wall Replacement, also known as Foundation Wall Replacement is the worst-case scenario for foundation repair. This repair will not be performed unless it is the last resort for foundation stability. Block Wall replacement is most commonly seen in basements built out of cinderblocks.

Block wall replacement is used when the foundation of a building is too far damaged to use carbon fiber straps, soldier beams, tie-back system, or any other foundation stabilization method we have.

In most cases of block wall replacement, a foundation wall has fallen completely in on the house, and there is no way to lift or push it back into place.

WHat leads to a block wall replacement?

Collapsed Foundation Wall

A collapsed foundation wall is the most severe form of foundation damage there is. It is caused by the neglecting of a horizontal crack.

A horizontal crack indicates a bowing wall. A bowing wall is due to hydrostatic pressure. This is the build-up of water pressure between the soil and the foundation wall. The hydrostatic pressure will overpower the structural integrity of the foundation wall and cause it to bow.

Ignoring even the thinnest horizontal crack can be detrimental to a foundation wall. A bowing wall can progress from a thin crack to a collapsed wall within just a year.

how to prevent a block wall replacement

Catch A bowing wall early

The most commonly asked question is “How Do I Prevent A Bowing Wall?” Here’s a checklist for a routine basement wall check:

  • Check every two months for a thin hair-line horizontal crack in the mortar of your basement block wall.
  • Line up a level vertically to the wall. If there is a gap between the side of the level and the wall, that indicates a bow.
  • Move any storage boxes away from the foundation wall, and check for mold/mildew.

If your home has a finished basement, here’s how to know if a wall is bowing:

  • Sheetrock walls will be water stained.
  • There will be a musty smell.
  • Any paneling will start to buckle.
